Roland Emmerich was born on 10th November 1955, Roland grew up in Sindelfingen, Baden-Wurttemberg, West Germany. He studied production design as well as direction at the Munich Film and Television School in 1977.

Emmerich decided to join in the school’s film director program after watching ‘Star Wars.’ He was required to do his final thesis thus he created a short film ‘The Noah’s Ark Principle’ which was eventually screened as the opening movie of 1984 in Berlin Film Festival.

Roland co-founded Centro Polis Entertainment 1985 with his sister, producer Ute Emmerich, and started to direct supernatural fantasies Making Contact (1986), Ghost Chase (1987), and thriller action film Moon44 (1990).

Later producer Mario Kassar asked Emmerich to direct an action film Isobar with Dean Devlin, an actor of Moon44. Roland consequently refused the offer to direct, after producers rejected Devlin’s re-write of the script leading to the dismissal of the Isobar project. Instead, Roland was hired to replace the director Andrew Davis for the action movie Universal Soldier released in 1992.

This was followed by two direct video sequels, theatrical and another one in 2012. Emmerich and Devlin then revealed a talent for conjuring A-level action with their first huge hit film together, Stargate (1994).

Emmerich’s directed film The Patriot (2000) took on an entirely different genre which grossed over $130 million domestically and was shown worldwide. He again returned with the sci-fi screenplay The Day After Tomorrow (2000).

His most recent directorial turns include the periodic biopic Anonymous (2012), the action thriller White House Down (2013), the historical drama Stonewall (2015) and the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).
