Janice Tjen

Janice Tjen was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, to Chinese Indonesian parents. She started playing tennis when her childhood friend, Priska Madelyn Nugroho, invited her to play the game. Her parents supported Janice in playing tennis so that she can remain outdoors rather than indoors.

Because of the prohibitive costs of turning professional at a young age, her parents and she made the decision for her to continue her tennis career in college tennis in the United States, initially at the University of Oregon and subsequently transferring to Pepperdine University. Janice juggled her sporting and academic life, graduating in 2024 with a sociology degree.

Career

Janice rose rapidly in the professional tennis ranks. She played for Indonesia in the 2022 Asian Games, where she won a bronze medal with partner Aldila Sutjiadi in doubles. She qualified for her first Grand Slam main draw at the 2025 US Open and went on to beat 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova and become the first Indonesian woman to win a Grand Slam match in over two decades.

Although losing to Emma Raducanu in the second round, Janice achieved history and boosted the profile of Indonesian tennis. She later became the first Indonesian woman since 2002 to reach a WTA 250 São Paulo Open final in 2025.

College Tennis

In college, Janice was an excellent tennis player. She played in the NCAA doubles final at Pepperdine University and earned a number of All-American honors and Player of the Week conference awards. College allowed her to hone her technical and mental game as she still played a sport while getting a degree.

Playing Style and Coaching

Janice is versatile in play, having great court coverage and strategic insight. Her game is compared to Ashleigh Barty because of her aggressive topspin forehand and strategic slice backhand.

Her coach, Chris Bint, noticed her early and committed completely to developing her, establishing her on the professional circuit.

Janice Tjen National Representation

Janice proudly speaks for Indonesia. Besides her individual tournaments, she also competes in the Billie Jean King Cup with an even win-loss ratio. She remains a source of inspiration for many Indonesian young sportspersons, demonstrating the prospects of success at the international level.

Personal and Family Relationships

Janice’s family actively helps her in her career and are die-hard fans of tennis. Though they could not travel to watch her US Open support due to a family medical circumstance, they trace her tournaments from Jakarta. She forged close relationships with other tennis players across the world, like New Zealand’s Vivian Yang, where she met at Pepperdine.

Janice also met and became friends with emerging tennis sensation Alex Eala from the Philippines, reminiscing about her close relationships within the Asian tennis circuit. Her friendships and family relationships have also had significant roles in supporting and encouraging her throughout her journey.

Janice Tjen Awards and Honors

Janice has been the recipient of several awards for her effort and ability. She received the 2021 ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year and several Player of the Week awards. In 2025, she received the ITF World Tennis Tour Player of the Month award twice, showing her increasing profile in tennis.
