Opal Perlman is a jewelry and fashion designer. She is famous for being the wife of actor Ron Perlman. Her husband, Ron is well-known for his role as Clay Morrow in the television series "Sons of Anarchy".
Opal was born to Jamaican Parents and was highly interested in fashion designing but before she got into a design, she studied psychology in college. As it is said, interest drives individual, she would cut classes to go spend time at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf’s instead. Hence, she took design training in New York.
Having a keen interest in fashion designing from a very young age, Perlman is inspired by organic arts, which comes from just about everything. When she first entered Parsons, she was a fashion designer and later switched into jewelry, making beaded pieces by hand.
Today the Opal Stone fine jewelry collection is more like sculpture than fashion. Frank Gehry and other architects are her inspirations. Moreover, Pearls are one of her favorite stones. She has a piece "Charles de Gaulle cuff " inspired by a plane ride en-route to Paris, where she imagined what it would be like to drop a pearl from the sky. Essentially, she takes aspects of what she sees and create it into something interesting to wear.
Speaking about her collection, she said:
It’s very organic, the big theme overall is the color of the gold and the color of the stones. Pieces in the 18k gold collection are substantial and heavy. A cuff inspired by Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles has a needle finish done by hand in six different directions.
All the pieces have intricately carved backs and galleries. Stone uses fine unusual gemstones in many pieces. A ring from her “Zebra” collection contrasts pastel sapphires with antique coral from the 1930s. She wears each design before finalizing its shape.
Opal Perlman has also extended her interest in handbags. Her handbag collection is heavily inspired by the jewelry. She wanted a handbag that met her needs and she wanted the very best which gave her a guideline to open up a handbag line. The next step in the progression of the brand is incorporating the jewelry into the handbags in the form of hardware.
Her bags has a little whimsy, but also a classic shape with some special touches like extra pockets or an alligator skin where normally find leather or suede. She has driven by yellow gold and she believes the hardware is the jewelry of the bag. She uses brass and bronze dipped in either 22-karat or 24-karat gold. She matches the color of the gold to the skins because she wants the stone and the metal to be in harmony with the jewelry. She carries that concept over into the leather and the hardware in the same way. Ron hosted an event to launch her new luxury handbag line, where several of Ron's actor friends were among the guests.
