Mirsad Betic was born on February 16, 1991, in Srebrenica, eastern Bosnia, and Herzegovina. His parents Suada Bektic and Sejad Bektic are Bosniak Muslim. Betic has two brothers Senad Bektic and Suvad Bektic and a sister, Medisa Kadic-Dudic.

At the age of three, Betic relocated in Italy along with his mother and siblings fleeing from the Bosnian War. Furthermore, his family stayed in Germany for five-years. Later at the age of nine, his family moved back to the United States and settled in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Betic attended the Irving Middle School and later graduated from the Lincoln Southeast High School. After moving to the United States, he began learning Karate and further started learning mixed martial arts in 2008.

On August 23, 2014, Betic was expected to face Ernest Chavez but Chevez was replaced by Max Holloway due to injury. But Betic also got replaced by newcomer Clay Collard. Similarly, Betic was expected to face Alan Omer on January 24, 2015, at UFC on Fox 14 but he faced Paul Redmond and won via unanimous decision.
