Nina Dobrev was born on 9th January 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria. At the age of two Dobrev moved to Canada and was raised in Toronto, Ontario. Her father Konstantin Dobrev, is a computer specialist and mother Michaela Dobreva an artist. Dobrev grew up along with her brother Aleksandar Dobrev.

Dobrev attended Vradenburg Junior Public School and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School and later Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough. From Ryerson University, Dobrev graduated by majoring in Sociology.
