Susan Dey was born on 10th December 1952, in Pekin, Illinois, the United States as Susan Hallock Dey. Her mother Ruth Pyle Dey was a nurse and father Robert Smith-Dey, a newspaper editor for the Standard-Star in New Rochelle, New York. Her mother died when Dey was eight years old. 

Dey belongs to an American nationality. She attended the Columbus Elementary School in Thornwood, New York. In 1970, Dey graduated from the Fox Lane High School.

Initially, Susan Dey worked as a model. Dey made her acting debut in 1970 through the television series The Partridge Family playing the role of Laurie Partridge until 1974. Similarly, she starred alongside Corbin Bernsen and Blair Underwood in the series L.A. Law. 

For her role as Grace Van Owen on the drama series, L.A. Law Dey won a Golden Globe Award. In 1972, Dey made her movie debut through Skyjacked as  Elly Brewster. Since then, he has starred in numbers of movies including, Looker, Blue River etc.

Susan Dey was previously married to Leonard Hirshan and had a child from their relationship. Dey married her ex-husband Leonard in November 1976. Dey and Leonard welcomed their daughter Sara Dey-Hirshan in 1978.

However, even being the parens of a child, the duo failed to continue their relationship and divorced on 19th January 1983. After that, Dey tied the knot with her second husband Bernard Sofronski, a Theatrical producer on 20 February 1988.
