Yaya DaCosta was born on 15th November 1982, in  Harlem, New York City, New York, United States. Her birth name is Camara Yaya DaCosta Johnson. She is the daughter of Carl Awolowo Johnson and Orundun DaCosta Johnson. 

DaCosta attended the Northfield Mount Hermon School. Later she joined Brown University and majored in Africana Studies and International Relations.

The 35 years old actress and model Yaya DaCosta was married to a cinematographer Joshua Bee Alafia. DaCosta and Joshua shared their vows on 23rd June 2012. The couple welcomed their first child, a son Sankara Alafia in September 2013. 

However, the things didn’t go well in between the couple. In November 2015, DaCosta filed a divorce with Joshua. Moreover, in an interview, DaCosta mentioned that she was never married to Joshua. But Joshua hasn’t talked anything about this topic.
