Brassard started playing basketball since his early age. As a youth, he made his hockey career debut with the Gatineau L’Intrepide where he captained his team. He then played with Quebec Major Junior Hockey League after he was drafted by the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

6 feet 1-inch tall centerman, Derick made his professional ice-hockey career debut with Columbus Blue Jackets on 21st September 2006. He played with the team for approximately seven years and signed a five-year contract with New York Rangers worth $25 million.

However, he served with the team for only four years and was traded to Ottawa Senators.
