A professional Finnish hockey player, Olli Maatta was selected by the Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft 2012. For those who are new to the name, he is a professional Ice hockey defenceman who is currently playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins of NHL.

 

Olli was selected 95th overall by SKA St. Petersberg in 2011 KHL Draft. He is also known as the youngest Finnish hockey player to participate in the under 20 World Championship.

Olli Maatta’s Early life and Education

Olli Maatta was born on 22nd August 1994 in Jyvaskyla, Finland. He began playing hockey by playing for his hometown team’s under-16. However, he hasn’t revealed the name of his school and colleges. He belongs to Finnish nationality.

Olli Maatta’s Career

As mentioned above, Olli began his playing career playing for his hometown teams under- 16 programs.  He played a game for JYP U16 in the Jr.C SM-sarja classification. His play was so strong that he received a two-game call-up to JYP’s under 20 teams and after that, he found himself on Finland’s national under-16 team by posting 13 points in 13 games.

When he turned 16, he was automatically promoted to JYP under-18 team and was swiftly promoted to under- 20 team after one game. When he completed various level of junior leagues, he was selected 85th overall by SKA Saint Petersburg in 2011 KHL Draft.

In the year 2022, he joined a London team to make a run for the J. Ross Robertson Cup. He continued his strong play and finished for the team lead with a scoring 23 points in 19 games. And the team-London received a berth at 2012 Memorial Cup held in Shawinigan, Quebec.

Olli was ranked as the 8th best North American skater, after the 2011-12 season and leading up to 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He was selected by the Draft hosts, Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round. He even attended the Penguins development camp.

After being selected for Penguins, his start achieving huge success. He was the key role in the Penguins 10-2 runs in the absence of their defensive corps. he even scored his first multi-goal in the NHL with two tallies in the Penguins’ 5-3 loss of the San Jose Sharks. Olli won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016. 

Because of Olli’s undisclosed injury, he left a game against the Winnipeg Jets. And after missing 24 games, he returned to the Penguins for the last game of the 2016-17.

Olli played in his 300th career NHL game against Washington Capitals during the season 2017-2018.
