Helen Folasade Adu or Sade Adu is the daughter of Adebisi Adu and Anne Hayes, and she was born on 16th January 1959 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Her father was a Nigerian lecturer in economics of Yoruba, and her mother is an English, district nurse.

Sade’s parents met each other in London and started dating. They got married in 1955, and after four years of marriage, they welcomed their daughter, Helen Adu. Soon after her birth, Adu’s parents separated, and her mother shifted to London. 

Sade also has an elder brother, Banji Adu. Sade was raised by her single mother and grandfather in Colchester, Essex, England.
